If you’re a fall lover, there are many things to be excited about. The weather becomes cooler, you get to wear your favorite sweaters, and there’s Halloween and Thanksgiving. Plus, the leaves change colors, providing dazzling scenes of nature.
When the leaves change, they eventually fall, and they can fall into your gutter.
Gutter cleaning is a necessity to help them keep water away from your home. Without regular cleaning, you’ll have clogged gutters, which can affect the safety of your home.
There’s more to cleaning gutters than getting rid of leaves. There are several things to keep in mind to give your gutters a proper cleaning. Here are some ways to do that.
Gutter Cleaning Safety
The best way to make sure you’re effective at cleaning your gutters is by being safe. Standing on a tall ladder may seem like a good idea, but there are better methods. There are gutter-cleaning tools that can clean your gutters while you’re safe on the ground.
In cases where you can’t get around using a ladder, avoid using a step ladder. If they get off balance, they can tip. Instead, use an extension ladder and have someone keep it stabilized.
If your home is over a single story, hire a gutter cleaning company. They have the equipment to clean your gutters from the ground. Never climb onto your roof to try and clear your gutters.
Check Elbows and Downspouts
Downspouts drain gutters and prevent overflow. To check your downspout, remove the elbow, which connects the downspout and gutter. Be gentle when you remove it – work the downspout back and forth.
Lead the elbow away from the downspout to get it loose.
If there’s a clog, you’ll have to do additional cleaning. Keep a five-gallon bucket underneath the downspout and use a hose to clean out the remaining debris.
Look inside the downspout for any clogs. Also, knock on the downspout to listen for changes in sound. A change in sound along the length of the downspout indicates a clog.
A high-pressure hose with a jet setting can also feed into it through the gutter. If water backs up, a clog is present.
For these types of clogs, use a plumber’s snake to loosen the clog. Finish cleaning it with the hose.
Effective Gutter Cleaning
Clean your gutters at least twice a year. It will save time and make the process easier. There will also be fewer chances for clogs to form.
Leaves are pretty easy to clear away, but dirt and other grime can build. Clearing away this stuff by hand will be messy; power washers and hoses help make this easier.
When debris and water build in gutters, it weighs them down. When this happens, your gutters can break off of your home.
In the winter, make sure to clear away ice dams in your gutter to prevent breaks and clogs.
